I’m most comfortable choosing Liberty Home Guard as a provider because of their straightforward contracts and stellar customer service that give them their overall reliability.

    However, Liberty Home Guard only offers a $2,000 coverage limit on most items. This is the industry standard, but if you need more to cover pricier systems like heating and air conditioning, I recommend Cinch Home Services as an alternative. Cinch uses annual coverage limits and has a total cap of $10,000 per year, making them perfect for covering pricier items. One downside, though, is that Cinch’s monthly premiums are much higher in Connecticut than they are in other states (roughly $30 more expensive than in the Midwest), but they’re still worth considering if you need higher coverage limits.

I initially wanted to include them because of their affordable monthly rates and their guarantee that they’ll request a service technician within four hours of when you submit a claim. Due to their recent legal issues, I recommend that all readers steer clear of Choice Home Warranty until these issues are resolved.

    My favorite things about Liberty Home Guard are its positive customer reviews and consistently great customer service. Liberty scored 4.7 stars on both Trustpilot and Google, which is higher than any other company I’ve seen. It’s very rare to come across scores like this in the home warranty industry, so don’t take it lightly. Trustworthiness is one of the most important factors when purchasing a home warranty company, making Liberty’s high company reputation score all the more important.

    Besides their great reviews,  I also like Liberty’s customization options. Liberty offers 42 add-ons, which is more than any other competitor on the market. These add-ons include unique items that other companies don’t offer, like trash compactors, casita guest units, and reverse osmosis water filtration systems, so Liberty really goes above and beyond.

    Liberty Home Guard’s Appliance Guard plan costs $49.99 a month, which is a bit expensive for a plan that only covers home appliances. Since it’s their cheapest plan, this high cost may deter shoppers looking for affordable home warranty coverage. Another big drawback is that Liberty excludes unknown preexisting conditions. This is a common exclusion, but some other companies in the industry (such as American Home Shield and Cinch Home Services) will cover them, so it’s disappointing that Liberty won’t.

    Liberty Home Guard has the highest overall rating of any company on our list, and it’s my top choice for a home warranty. I have more confidence in Liberty than any of its competitors because of their glowing customer reviews and straightforward contracts, and their reasonable prices are an added plus. Liberty’s rates are some of the best in Connecticut because they’re consistent from state to state, unlike some other companies on our list that will raise their prices in more expensive areas. On top of that, Liberty offers 42 add-ons, which gives you plenty of options to mix and match to find the coverage that’s right for you.

    My favorite plan from Liberty Home Guard (and objectively the best bargain they offer) is the Total Home Guard ($59.99) since it’s a great deal for full home coverage. Other providers have appliance-only and systems-only plans for a more affordable price, so I recommend spending the extra $5 to $10 to get the Total Home Guard plan for quality comprehensive coverage.

    Liberty Home Guard is the only provider on our list to earn a perfect score for their plans and coverage, mainly because they have more add-on options than any other competitor. Most companies only have around five or ten add-ons each, but Liberty offers a whopping 42 add-on options, giving them a huge leg up on the competition. Also, unlike other companies, Liberty has everyday low prices ranging from $50 to $60 a month instead of relying on limited-time deals to reel in customers. The Total Home Guard plan is my top choice from Liberty since it contains full comprehensive coverage and only costs $5 more than the Systems Guard plan. The comprehensive coverage is a much better bargain than the other two plans, so in my opinion, it’s better to spend the extra $5 to $10 on the Total Home Guard plan to get your money’s worth. 

    Liberty’s service fees range from $65 to $125 depending on where you live, the service plan you choose, and the promotional deal you get. These service fees act as a deductible for your individual claims, meaning that if your service fee is $100 but your total repair cost is $450, you only have to pay the $100 upfront cost (as long as Liberty pays the rest of the claim).

    It’s important to note that Liberty won’t cover damage from natural disasters or secondary damage from roof leaks (mold, corrosion, etc.). However, the roof leak coverage will cover the source of the leak if it’s caused by normal wear and tear, like weathering or old age.

    These exclusions are standard in the industry and match most of what I found with competitors. However, exclusions for known or unknown preexisting conditions are notorious for allowing providers to deny claims, so be wary of that.

    Liberty Home Guard is one of the more affordable home warranty providers in the industry, with plans ranging from $49.99 to $59.99 a month. In Connecticut, they’re even more affordable because their rates don’t rise like those of some other companies. Competitors that are normally budget friendly, such as American Home Shield and Cinch Home Services, have prices in Connecticut that are nearly double their average monthly rates simply because it’s a more expensive area, so Liberty’s reliable premiums are a really big perk. They may not offer plans as cheap as those of other providers, but they’re not as expensive as the premium options on the market, like the ShieldPlatinum Plan from American Home Shield for $109.16, either. Additionally, Liberty frequently offers online discounts and will regularly reach out to me about upcoming promotion deals, so there are plenty of opportunities to save.

    I recommend reading Liberty Home Guard’s sample contract for information on cash reimbursements and replacement parts since this can increase your costs, bringing Liberty’s overall affordability score down to 8.9.

    Liberty’s agents were informative and straightforward when I spoke to them over the phone, and many customer reviews confirm their helpfulness. However, Liberty has a few drawbacks, one of which is the long waiting period (30 to 60 days) for coverage to begin after you sign a contract, which negatively affects its customer experience score. They also have more points of contact after your quote, which may get annoying if you don’t like texts and calls from unknown numbers. These aren’t deal-breakers, but with all of that considered, we gave Liberty a 7.8 out of 10.

    Liberty has the highest company reputation score on our list, and they consistently score higher than the competition on online review sites. Most of their reviews on Trustpilot and Google were five stars, which is extremely rare. Many customers praised Liberty Home Guard for their helpful customer service, reliability, and prompt service. One customer on Google said:

    “Each time I have dealt with Liberty Home Guard, I love how friendly the agents are … I wish the wait times wouldn’t be so long. But, because of this amazing customer service, I recommend customers switch…to Liberty Home Guard because you aren’t stuck in crazy loops and you get to talk to a live person.”

    Another customer on Google said:

    “Customer service with Liberty Home Guard was very good. They resolved my billing issue and helped me file my claim.  The representative was courteous and efficient.”

    On the downside, most complaints about Liberty relate to them not fulfilling claims, being slow to address repairs, or using sub-par workers, which are common issues in the industry. 

    One customer said:

    “Do not use this company. They will not replace your water heater if the tank is spraying water all over, because ‘leaks’ are excluded. They will do anything to not pay out a claim.”

    While this is a noteworthy complaint, Liberty is legally in the right here because “leaks” are one of the notable exclusions in their contract, as they are with most major home warranty providers. However, the good reviews certainly outweigh the bad, and for that reason, we gave Liberty a 9.1.

We reached out to a representative from the Better Business Bureau, and they told us, “This business is not currently rated. BBB has recently received numerous complaints against this business and will issue a rating after it has fully evaluated them.” When asked about whether they revoke ratings after an increase in complaints, the rep said, “Yes, if they feel they need to review the complaints first before issuing an accurate rating.” This scenario has happened to LHG twice in the last two years, but each time the BBB has restored its A+ rating after a thorough review.

    Liberty Home Guard earned a perfect claims process score because of their fast response times and emergency services. Liberty’s average response time is 12 hours, which is extremely quick, even when compared to other fast companies in the industry. Liberty also offers emergency services, and while these aren’t uncommon, they’re crucial when home systems or major appliances stop working after hours or on weekends. Though their coverage limits aren’t high enough to cover an entire system replacement in most cases, Liberty’s claims process is rapid and garners fewer complaints than that of the competition, making it worthy of a perfect score. 

    Liberty Home Guard is available in all 50 states, which is why we gave it a 10 out of 10. Nationwide availability is a good sign that the company is established and less likely to engage in scammy behavior, and Liberty has coverage throughout the whole United States.

    The best things about American Home Shield (AHS) are its coverage for preexisting conditions and its high coverage limits. AHS covers damage that many other companies don’t, including undetectable preexisting conditions, rust, and corrosion. Additionally, AHS offers high coverage limits ($5,000 HVAC and $4,000 appliance limits on its ShieldPlatinum plan) that are roughly $2,000 above those of most competitors. Although these coverage caps are only available for its top-tier plan ($109.16 a month), it’s a worthwhile investment if you end up getting a higher payout.

    American Home Shield’s inconsistent customer reviews are their biggest downside since it makes it hard to feel confident about the company’s performance. AHS has the lowest customer reputation score on our list, with most of the online complaints being about denied claims and difficult customer service. AHS still has a B rating on BBB, which speaks to their legitimacy, but their customer reviews are so split that I question their reliability. Additionally, AHS’s prices vary a lot from state to state, with prices roughly $40 higher in Connecticut than they are in other states, which is a major con.

    American Home Shield ranks second best when it comes to their overall score, right under Liberty Home Guard, mainly due to the high coverage limits on their ShieldPlatinum plan. In addition, one of my favorite perks is their coverage for undetectable preexisting conditions, rust, and corrosion. These are common exclusions in the industry, but unlike other companies, AHS still covers their damages, which is a huge plus to your policy. American Home Shield’s coverage limits are equally impressive at $5,000 for HVAC and $4,000 for appliances on their ShieldPlatinum plan. Most other competitors top out at $2,000 per appliance. However, at almost $109.16, the ShieldPlatinum plan is beyond the affordability range for many homeowners. In general, AHS’s prices are much higher in Connecticut than they are in other states, so they’re not the budget-friendly option they normally are.

    Now for the downsides: American Home Shield has more negative reviews than the competition, specifically about claims being denied. Its customer reviews are very mixed, which makes its service and overall reputation unpredictable. If you want more affordability or reliability out of your company, I recommend going with Liberty Home Guard.

    American Home Shield normally has the most affordable basic coverage on our list, but in Connecticut, they’re actually one of the most expensive options. AHS’s rates vary greatly from state to state, with the rates in Connecticut being about $40 more per month than in most other states. Their rates also vary from day to day, with the ShieldGold and ShieldPlatinum plans running about $10 more when I checked them yesterday versus the quote I got today (reflected in the chart below). The ShieldGold plan is my top choice since it covers most major systems and appliances, but since the price is much higher in Connecticut than in other areas of the country, I’d recommend Liberty Home Guard’s Total Home Guard plan as an alternative since it’s a better deal ($59.99). The ShieldPlatinum plan is especially pricey at $109.16 a month. Any home warranty plan over $100 is a bit ridiculous, in my opinion, and likely not a beneficial investment. Still, AHS offers great coverage limits, so they’re worth considering if you want top-notch payouts. 

    As a side note, American Home Shield only offers six add-ons, which is the lowest number on our list. Its affordable rates and straightforward plans make up for it, so we gave it a 9.0 out of 10.

    American Home Shield only offers a few add-ons, but the electronics protection plan is a unique offering. It protects an unlimited amount of smart devices that we use every day, but it comes with a lot of exclusions (it doesn’t cover cell phones, preexisting conditions, theft, cosmetic damage, etc.). For $14 a month, I have mixed feelings about whether it’s worth it or not. Be sure to read a sample contract and read the exclusions carefully before buying.

    American Home Shield is normally the cheapest home warranty provider in most states, but not in Connecticut. Their basic plans can get as low as $27.49 a month in some locations (even down to $7.49 a month, depending on promotional discounts). In theory, this should grant them a perfect score, but AHS’s prices vary a lot from state to state, bringing its affordability score down to 8.7. For instance, their rates are roughly $40 higher in Connecticut than they are in Midwestern states, which is disconcerting.

    This price difference could be due to any number of factors, but I highly recommend that budget-conscious buyers wait for a sale. If you input your email and phone number for a quote, AHS will text and call you with promotional offers, making it easier to stay up to date with their deals.

    American Home Shield’s inconsistent reviews gave me mixed feelings about their customers’ experiences, but their responses to customer complaints helped ease my mind. AHS representatives commented on almost all negative online customer reviews in order to resolve their issues or apologize. One of their responses on Google said:

    “Thanks for bringing this issue to our attention. Please know that we’d like to look into this further. Please add the dispatch number so that we can review your claim. We’ll follow up with you accordingly.”

    These comments are often just an attempt to save face, but it’s nice that AHS goes above and beyond the norm to respond to every complaint. Most negative reviews were about denied claims and incompetent technicians, which are common issues. Because of their diligence, we gave AHS an 8.4.

    American Home Shield has the lowest company reputation score on our list, mainly due to their inconsistent reviews. For instance, on Trustpilot, the majority of reviews are absolutely scathing. However, on Google, most of its reviews are five stars. These reviews tell very different stories, making it difficult to accurately assess the company and pin down how they’re performing.

    Most customer complaints were regarding uncovered items, poor communication, and logistical errors. One customer explained their experience with the company:

    “Each time you call, you get a new service rep who says completely opposite things. You have to fight them on everything and make sure the rep marks your issue as needing to be expedited. This puts them under a tighter timeline to assign and complete the job, and if they don’t find an available contractor, you can hire your own, and they must reimburse you. I use this tactic frequently, and it has always worked.”

    However, AHS commonly receives praise for its quick responses to claims and high payouts. One customer said:

    “I’ve had nothing but positive experiences with [American] Home Shield. Just in the past few months I have saved a few thousand when my water heater went out followed by my front load washer. Both were quickly replaced with very high quality machines for only the price of my set co-pay.”

    American Home Shield reviews are all over the map, but they tend to balance each other out, so we gave AHS a 7.7.

    American Home Shield ranks in the middle of our list when it comes to its claims process. They have an average response time of 48 hours, which isn’t incredibly fast, but it’s still respectable. AHS has coverage limits of $5,000 for HVAC and $4,000 for appliances, so the payouts for claims are good as long as they’re covered. However, most of AHS’s complaints are about denied claims. One Trustpilot customer stated:

    “AHS denied my claim, stating it was due to a manufacturer defect. A coil failure after 11 years was deemed to be a manufacturer defect, even though the expected life of the part was between 8 to 12 years.”’

    This review shows a claim denial on a technicality, bordering on bad faith. On the other hand, one customer on Google said:

    “We had a leak in a steam hose on our dryer. The AHS rep couldn’t repair it, so we got a new dryer. American Home Shield is simply the BEST in the home warranty business, hands down.”

    Mixed reviews are common in the industry, but American Home Shield’s reviews are even more mixed than those of other companies, so it’s hard to get a read on their overall performance. Still, for its high payouts, we gave American Home Shield an 8.4.

    Select Home Warranty has the most affordable comprehensive coverage plan out of all the companies on our list at just $47.75 a month. Covering all your major systems and appliances for less than $50 a month is almost unheard of, so I highly recommend Select for homeowners who want the best value for their dollar. I also like that Select is very active with promotional discounts and will regularly text me with offers for unadvertised deals, including their Platinum Care plan for$379.99 a year with $60 service fees. In terms of monthly price, Select is the best option for budget-conscious buyers in Connecticut.

    I have three main issues with Select Home Warranty: their low coverage limits, their strict terms and conditions, and their unreliable customer reviews. First, Select has the lowest coverage limits of any company on our list. Appliances, plumbing, and electrical are all capped at $500 per item, which is much lower than the industry standard of $2,000 per item. Second, Select’s terms and conditions are very strict. They can request up to three prior years of maintenance records and photos before they approve repairs, which can make the claims process excruciating. Without these documents, the most you’ll get for any item is only $150.00. Lastly, there’s a good bit of evidence that Select offers a free month of coverage to customers who leave a favorable online review, which can create a large influx of 5-star reviews that aren’t trustworthy. If anyone is personally gaining from leaving a review, their opinion is biased and can’t be taken at face value, making it hard to gauge how accurate Select’s online reviews are.

    Select Home Warranty is the most affordable company on our list for Connecticut, and their comprehensive coverage is a great deal at only $47.75 a month. However, their appliance coverage limits are especially low at $500 per item, which isn’t even enough to buy a new replacement for most items. Their HVAC limits are only $3,000, which is a few thousand shy of the $4,000 to $5,000 industry average. This money can be helpful if you’re in a pinch for HVAC repairs, but for appliances, you may be better off just saving up to pay out of pocket. Despite their low coverage limits, Select’s monthly rates are very affordable, so they’re still a top contender in my book.

    However, Select’s terms and conditions are stricter than most competitors. Select requires you to report your claim within three days of discovering a malfunction, which could cause problems if a technician says the malfunction was ‘discoverable’ before you reported it. Likewise, Select can request up to three prior years of maintenance records to perform covered repairs. Both of these requirements give the company more leeway to avoid covering your claims, so be aware that loopholes like this exist, and Select will likely use them to their advantage. Despite any cons, Select has the highest affordability score on our list, free roof leak coverage, and plenty of perks, so I’d recommend them to budget-conscious homeowners.

    Select Home Warranty offers three coverage options that are all priced between $40 and $50, but each plan also includes free roof leak coverage, which is a big benefit considering Connecticut can accumulate more than 65 inches of rain annually. All three plans are close in price, so I recommend spending $3 more to get the Platinum Care plan’s full coverage since it gives you more bang for your buck. Select’s rates are pretty consistent from state to state, giving them the cheapest rates in Connecticut while most competitors’ rates have climbed. They also have cheaper service fees than a lot of the competition, making them an all-around affordable choice. Select only offers nine add-ons, which is fewer than most competitors, but its rates are a great value, so we gave it an 8.3.

    Select Home Warranty has the best affordability score on our list, which is no surprise because all their plans cost between $44 and $48 a month. Getting full coverage for under $50 a month is a great deal, but it’s an especially good bargain considering some companies’ plans cost more than twice as much (over $100 a month) in Connecticut. Select also has some of the lowest service deductibles on our list, and I’ve personally received texts from Select offering me a promotion for $60 service fees with the purchase of its Platinum Care plan for $379.99 a year. Select Home Warranty texts me more frequently than any other provider, which is mildly annoying, but it’s great if you’re on the hunt for a fresh home warranty deal. It’s important to note that Select’s low coverage limits could make your repairs more costly in the long run, so we gave them a 9.1.     Select Home Warranty ranks in the middle of our list when it comes to their customer experience scores. In general, most customers were happy with their experience and spoke very highly of their sales reps. One Trustpilot customer said:

    “I had a very pleasant conversation with the agent. He was not pushy. He didn’t try to keep upselling me to another level or extra items. He cut to the chase, and I was off the phone in a matter of minutes.”

    I can confirm that the sales reps were friendly based on my conversations with them, but friendliness isn’t everything. Many customers seemed unaware of the exclusions in the contract because the sales reps didn’t mention them. This is common, but it could be misleading, so we gave Select an 8.1.

    Select Home Warranty ranks in the middle of our list for their company reputation, but there is some debate as to the legitimacy of their positive reviews. One customer said:

    “This company is a SCAM! The only reason they have positive reviews is that they offer new customers an additional month of coverage in exchange for a favorable REVIEW, a practice that should be deemed ILLEGAL.”

    Select has decent ratings on review sites, but I can’t verify that Select is offering discounts to new customers for favorable reviews. However, I can confirm that many customers wrote their reviews immediately after purchasing their policy (without ever placing a claim). Here are just a few examples:

    Naturally, this made me skeptical when checking out their customer reviews. Still, they’re BBB-certified and have great value for customers, so we gave them an 8.0 out of 10.

    AFC Home Club has two unique perks: they have a lifetime workmanship guarantee, and they let members choose their own technicians. First, their lifetime workmanship guarantee means that if a covered item breaks, AFC will cover the parts and labor for the entirety of a member’s plan if the same component breaks again. Most other companies only offer a 30-day or 60-day guarantee, so AFC’s lifetime guarantee is miles ahead. However, AFC letting members pick their own technicians is my favorite feature. Other companies rarely offer this, but with AFC, the process is simple: pick your technician, and you’re good to go. These are some of the most important features you could look for in a home warranty company, making AFC Home Club one of my top five picks for home warranty providers.

    My biggest problem with AFC Home Club is their lack of emergency services. Every other company on our list offers emergency services, so the fact that AFC doesn’t provide them is a big disadvantage. Most of the time, when things break, it’s an emergency, so it’s expected that home warranty providers will offer emergency services to deal with these problems quickly.
    Also, AFC won’t cover unknown preexisting conditions — a common exclusion, but one that exposes homeowners to risk. While most companies don’t cover preexisting conditions, this exclusion can be used as an escape hatch allowing providers to avoid covering claims.

    AFC Home Club stands out for their lifetime workmanship guarantee and for letting members choose their own service technicians. These two features are highly underrated, and they go a long way toward delivering better service. Trustworthiness is a big issue in the home warranty industry, so getting to choose your own technician goes a long way towards preventing problems from sub-par contractors. Also, AFC’s lifetime workmanship guarantee surpasses the guarantee of every other company on this list, so they’re the best when it comes to making sure your repairs are covered once and for all.

    However, AFC doesn’t provide emergency services, which would make me hesitant to purchase a policy with them. When a major appliance or home system breaks, fixing it is often an emergency, so waiting for the average response time just doesn’t cut it. AFC has an average response time of 24 to 48 hours — a long time to wait if you’re in a pinch. The Gold and Silver plans are a bit overpriced in Connecticut compared to other states, so I recommend the Platinum Plan because it’s a decent price for comprehensive coverage (only $3 more per month than Liberty Home Guard’s Total Home Guard plan).

    AFC Home Club usually offers four plans instead of the typical three, but the Diamond Plan isn’t available in Connecticut. AFC’s prices start at $40.42 a month for the Silver Plan, which is a bit overpriced for a plan that only offers kitchen and laundry appliance coverage. However, the Platinum Plan ($62.58) is an exceptionally good bargain, offering comprehensive coverage for around the same price as Liberty Home Guard’s Total Home Guard plan ($59.99). AFC has flexible service fees that start as low as $75, so we gave it an 8.1 for its versatility and value.

    AFC Home Club is tied for first place with Select Home Warranty when it comes to its affordability score, making it a great choice for budget-conscious buyers. Overall, AFC has very reasonable rates, but their monthly premiums change based on location, so their Connecticut prices aren’t as affordable as their prices in the Midwest, so Select is the more affordable option here. Still, their prices are within a reasonable range in Connecticut, and they allow customers to set their service fees as low as $75, giving them more control over their monthly rate. It’s worth noting that non-emergency services outside of normal business hours may cost you additional fees, so be sure to read the entire AFC Home Club sample contract to learn all the details about your plan.

    AFC Home Club has the highest customer experience score on our list, and it’s mainly because customers can choose their own technicians. One customer stated:

    “I’ve been with AFC Home Club since 2019 and really appreciate their quick responses. The flexibility they provide to go through a technician of your choice or have them find you one is very helpful as well.”

    Choosing a technician you trust can help give you peace of mind during repairs, which is a huge perk not many competitors offer. However, AFC has an average response time of 24 to 48 hours, which isn’t the fastest on our list, so it prevented them from earning a perfect score. For these reasons, we gave AFC Home Club a 9.2.

    AFC Home Club has average online reviews that aren’t overwhelmingly positive or negative, but they have fewer reviews than the competition. All the other providers on our list have thousands of Trustpilot reviews, while AFC only has 24. On Google, they have 1,598 reviews, but other companies have tens of thousands. This isn’t a deal-breaker, but it doesn’t help bolster the company’s reputation.

    Customers typically praise AFC for the ability to choose their provider, with one customer saying, “The ability to choose my own technician is very important to me. I know by doing so, I get the caliber of person that I always have dealt with for the maintenance of my equipment.” 

    However, most complaints were about denied claims, which is very common in the industry. One customer on Google said:

    “Every service request we’ve done has either been denied or had minimal pay on it. Absolutely ridiculous!”

    This shows that your plan’s exclusions matter a great deal. Be wary of these legal loopholes because companies will use them to deny claims or offer a minimum payment in lieu of a full replacement. Because of AFC’s average reviews, we gave them an average score of 8.3.

    My favorite features of Cinch Home Services are its $10,000 annual coverage caps and its unknown preexisting condition coverage. Cinch is the only provider on our list to offer a collective annual coverage limit of $10,000 instead of limits for individual items, which gives you more money at your disposal for specific repairs. Additionally, Cinch covers unknown preexisting conditions, which is one less thing to worry about when you’re submitting a claim. On top of that, Cinch’s 180-day workmanship guarantee, affordable rates, and B+ Better Business Bureau rating make them a top contender.

    Most of my complaints are about Cinch’s prices. First, they offer fewer discounts than the competition, and their monthly rates vary greatly from state to state. The quote I got for a policy in Connecticut is about $30 to $40 more expensive than the one I got for Kansas City on the same day. Likewise, all of its service fee options (ranging from $100 to $150) are pricey, and if you choose a lower service fee, it raises your monthly premium. Another minor qualm I have is that Cinch doesn’t offer roof leak coverage — not even as a paid add-on — which is a letdown. None of these cons are deal-breakers, but the pricing issues are especially bothersome.

    Cinch stands out for its $10,000 annual coverage limits and its coverage of preexisting conditions. I can’t stress enough how useful these features are. The $10,000 annual coverage limit is great for payouts since most homeowners only have a few repairs in one year, leaving more money at your disposal. Likewise, Cinch’s unknown preexisting condition coverage (along with rust and corrosion coverage) is another rare feature that many companies can’t match, making it easier for you to get your claims covered with fewer exclusions. 

    While these two features are impressive, Cinch’s preventative maintenance benefits are another underrated perk. Cinch will provide one free air conditioning and/or heating system maintenance visit for up to $100 in the event that you have no claims of any type during your first year. In other words, you actually get rewarded for not having any claims. No other company on our list offers a benefit like that. Cinch does have downsides, however, like expensive service fees and inconsistent monthly premiums across states. The monthly premiums for my quote in Connecticut were about $30 to $40 more expensive than in some other states. Still, the pros outweigh the cons, so if you’re looking for great coverage limits and coverage for preexisting conditions, Cinch is a great option. 

    Cinch Home Services has the lowest plans and coverage score on our list, mainly because of its expensive service fees and limited add-ons. Cinch is the only provider on our list with service fees as high as $150, which can add up very quickly if you have more than a few malfunctions in a year. Your monthly rate can rise by more than $10 a month if you try to choose a cheaper service fee, and with Cinch’s especially high Connecticut rates, it ends up being expensive either way. Additionally, Cinch only offers six add-ons, so there’s not much in terms of customization. However, Cinch has $10,000 annual coverage limits and straightforward plan options, so there’s plenty to like. Still, the expensive service fees and lack of add-ons brought Cinch’s score down to 6.7.

    Cinch Home Services is tied with American Home Shield for last place when it comes to affordability, mainly due to its high service fees and price variations across localities. Most companies’ service fees top out at $125, but Cinch’s range from $100 to $150 — the most expensive on our list. Additionally, Cinch’s rates vary greatly from state to state. The quote I got for Connecticut is about $30 to $40 more expensive than the one I got for Kansas City, as seen in the screenshots below.

    Cinch Home Services ties with Liberty Home Guard at the bottom of our list for its customer experience score, but that doesn’t mean that customers were necessarily unhappy with their experiences. Although they may have some negative reviews, Cinch goes above and beyond when it comes to reaching out to customers who have had a bad encounter.

    One customer on Google left a review that said:

    “I’ve been with this company for years for my rental. The one time I actually need help with a big claim, they screw me with a big bill in the end. No longer will I use their services.”

    But then, they updated their review later to say:

    “I received a call from Wendy Dunn from customer relations. She was extremely helpful in getting more back from my replacement. I give her 5 stars for explaining limits and her kindness and compassion. This really helped a lot and I thank you.”

    Likewise, another customer said:

    “Mary, a social media specialist with Cinch, reached out to me after writing this review, and she was amazing. She actually informed us of what was happening and made sure my service providers reached out and communicated effectively.”

    This shows that Cinch is dedicated to making things right with the customer, but since their initial service could be improved, we gave Cinch a 7.8.

    Cinch Home Services is tied for second place with AFC Home Club for its company reputation score, making it another great alternative to Liberty Home Guard. Most importantly, Cinch earned a B+ with the Better Business Bureau, giving it the highest BBB score on our list. Some customers left complaints about denied claims or hard-to-reach customer service reps, which are common in the industry. However, many customers praised Cinch’s timely responses and straightforward service. One Google customer said:

    “My appointment was scheduled in a very timely manner. We had to wait for parts to be ordered. Once it was determined that the dryer was not repairable, I was given a replacement or buy-out option. I chose buy-out. The check arrived in about a week. I am more than satisfied with the service I received.”

    While their online reviews aren’t as impressive as those of the competition, Cinch has a high BBB rating and limited complaints, so we gave them an 8.3.

    Connecticut Home Warranty Regulations

    Connecticut has specific regulations for home warranty companies, most clearly stated in §38a-320 of the Connecticut General Statutes. This spells out the definition of a home service contract, but section 38a-320 doesn’t say much about how these companies should operate. If consumers suspect any foul play and want to report suspicious behavior, they should file a complaint with the Office of the Attorney General

    Additionally, Connecticut law for home improvement contracts under the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection requires a written contract for every home improvement job, including the following notes:

    • It must be in writing, including all changes and modifications.
    • It must include your Contractor Registration (HIC) number.
    • It must include four dates: the date the contract is signed, the date the work will begin, the date by which the work will be completed, and the date by which the homeowner may cancel the transaction.
    • It must include a Notice of the Customer’s Right to Cancel within three business days after signing the contract.

    Connecticut also regulates new home warranties and implied warranties for new homes, which protect the buyer in the event of sub-par construction on a new home. While this doesn’t directly apply to home service contracts, it’s worthwhile to know if you’re thinking about purchasing a home warranty for a newly built home.

    The Connecticut Office of the Attorney General released a statement regarding fraudulent letters circulating in Connecticut that target homeowners, trying to trick them into buying home service contracts by making the letters look as if they’re from the homeowner’s mortgage lender. Typically, the letters will use threatening legal language like “final notice,” “immediate response requested,” “finance charges,” or “financially liable” in order to make homeowners afraid that they’ll have consequences if they don’t purchase a home warranty policy.

    In his press release, Attorney General William Tong said:

    “A home warranty is never required, and your mortgage company will not send you a threatening letter about buying one. If you receive a mailing from an unidentified sender encouraging you to sign up for a warranty or other service, that is a red flag.”

    Soon after The Connecticut Office of the Attorney General published this press release, they investigated Integrity Admin Group, Inc. and found them guilty of fraudulent marketing practices. In a settlement, they ordered Integrity Admin Group to pay $10,000 for their “misleading, high-pressure mailings.” Although the state enforced punishment for one company, they’re just one of many. These scams are prevalent all throughout the country, so be sure to keep an eye out, as these types of cons are only getting more and more common.
