Coverage

The main points of American Home Shield coverage for all home systems and appliances that can be included in the contract are summarized in the table below.

Air Conditioning

American Home Shield has strict dollar limits for home system repairs. For air conditioning systems, all the inside units are covered for up to $1500, and ductwork is covered up to $1000. For refrigerant replacement, the charge will be $10 per pound. All the outside or underground components and legally mandated diagnostic tests are not covered.

Heating System

For heating and ductwork, all the units are covered except outside pipes, pumps, and components, fuel storage, portable units, fireplaces, wood, pellet or grain heating units, and legally mandated diagnostics. Coverage may also be limited by your specific contract. The charge for refrigerant replacement will again be $10 per pound.

Electrical System

For the electrical part, all the wires, lights, and fans are covered, but any audio or video gadgets, phones, cable, alarms, security systems, and such, are not.

Plumbing System

Plumbing is only covered up to $1000, and that includes diagnostics, repair, and replacement of any parts. The customer is responsible for any expenses above this limit, and for any parts and works listed in the Not Covered column of the table below.

For water heaters, only tankless units and circulating pumps are covered. No auxiliary fuel storage tanks and no energy conservation units are covered. If your water heater makes a noise, fixing that is not covered either.

Home Appliances

All components and parts are covered for most appliances, including garbage disposals, instant water dispensers, smoke detectors, ceiling fans and doorbells if they are not the part of the intercom systems. However, for the refrigerators, AHS will only pay up to $5 000 per dual compressor refrigerator. That includes access, diagnosis, and repair or replacement. Plans and Costs

American Home Shield company offers the following plans: Systems Plan, Appliance Plan, Combo Plan, and Build Your Own Plan. The pricing is tricky and depends on how much you want to spend per month vs per service call. The more you pay per month, the cheaper the service call is for you, and vice versa.
Systems plan includes replacement of repair of the components of all major home systems but  does not include any household appliances. Appliance plan, on the contrary, includes appliances but does not include any systems, such as plumbing, a/c and heating, electric wires and ceiling fans. Combo plan is the most popular one. It includes everything in Systems and Appliance plans and saves you $14 a month over purchasing the two plans separately. Build Your Own Plan allows homeowners to include only those items that they would like to cover. This is the most convenient and the most expensive plan available with American Home Shield.
Plans Cost Best For
Plan 1: Appliances plan
  • $38,99 / month if you pay 75$ per service call
  • $31,99 / month if you pay 100$ per service call
  • $18,99 / month if you pay 125$ per service call
This plan works best for those homeowners who don't worryabout home systems, but would like to be sure that in case something happens to their kitchen appliances or washer and dryer, it will be quickly fixed or replaced.
Plan 2: Systems plan

  • $36,99 / month if you pay 100$ per service call
  • $33,99 / month if you pay 125$ per service call
If your house was built more than 10-15 yeras ago, this plan may come hande to cover home systems as well as appliances.

Policy and User-Friendliness

American Home Shield warranty policy information was easy to find, except for dollar limits, and it was written in such a way that any average client would able to easily understand the terms and conditions. Most of the terms were not tricky. However, any information on pre-inspection was not available. As for the waiting time mentioned in the contract, the customers should keep in mind that it will take up to 48 hours to get a call from the service company, not a service itself.

Upon analyzing customer reviews in terms of AHS user friendliness, it was found that there were problems with getting in touch with the operator without going through the recording first. Some users had to make additional phone calls to get authorization for the services, and the company was slow to react to emergency complaints. The contract states that the services will be initiated under normal circumstances within 48 hours after the service request has been made, but many customers complain that it takes much longer than that.

Overall, while the company tries to provide the good quality services to the customers, there can be some obstacles and limitations in using the company's policy.

Summary

American Home Shield is one of the oldest home warranty companies on the market. It honors new contracts and provides services to customers from all 50 states. The company claims to address any issues covered by the contract within 48 hours. However, it does not always stand up to its words. There are several types of contract, and the customers may choose to select coverage either for the home systems, or for appliances, or a combo plan. Customized plans that only cover items selected by the customer are also available.

Signing the contract is a fast and easy procedure that can be made by phone, regular mail or online. There are monthly payments and additional service fees. Please note that the contract is renewed automatically unless canceled by the customer.
Customer ratings that we collected on 13 consumer report sites range from 1 to 4.5 stars. The customers mostly complained about the slow response to their emergency claims, denials of the claims for the issues with the contract coverage, and unprofessionalism of the contractors.
